Hatha Yoga sequences help build strength and flexibility in the body. Props are an essential part of the practise to enable the postures to be done with precision and safety. Time is given to settle into each posture so that students can attain a deeper understanding of the benefits within their own bodies.
The word “Hatha” can be split into two words “ha” meaning effort and “tha” meaning letting go. Once we achieve correct alignment in any asana/posture, it is important to let go of tension and relax into the asana. The word “asana” commonly translated to posture means an easy seat.
“Ha” can also be interpreted as masculine energy and “Tha” as feminine. We all have masculine and feminine energies within us. Masculine energy is upward, based above the diaphragm controlling respiration and heart rate. Feminine energy is downward, based in the lower body responsible for reproduction, digestion and elimination functions.
On a universal scale, “ha” is Sun and “tha” is Moon. The cooling, feminine properties of the moon are needed to balance out the heating, masculine properties of the Sun.
